At The Faces Behind A Purpose For You, we firmly believe that education is key to breaking the cycle of abuse and fostering healthy, respectful relationships. That’s why our team recently visited local elementary and high schools to engage students in discussions about healthy versus unhealthy relationships, loving themselves, and the importance of education. We visited Thomas Jefferson High School, Highland Springs High School and Pleasant Grove Elementary

Throughout our visit, we emphasized the importance of recognizing the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Healthy Relationships

1. Respect: In healthy relationships, mutual respect forms the foundation. This means valuing each other’s opinions, boundaries, and autonomy.

2. Communication: Effective communication is essential for resolving conflicts peacefully and understanding each other’s needs and emotions.

3. Trust: Trust is built through honesty, reliability, and consistency. It’s about feeling safe and secure in the relationship.

4. Equality: Healthy relationships are based on equality, where both partners contribute to decision-making and share responsibilities.

5. Support: Partners in healthy relationships uplift and encourage each other’s personal growth and well-being.

Unhealthy Relationships

1. Control: In unhealthy relationships, one partner may exert control over the other’s actions, thoughts, or decisions.

2. Manipulation: Manipulative behavior involves using guilt, intimidation, or coercion to get what one wants, often at the expense of the other’s well-being.

3. Isolation Isolating a partner from friends, family, or support systems is a warning sign of an unhealthy relationship.

4. Lack of Respect: Disrespectful behavior, such as name-calling, belittling, or ignoring boundaries, is not acceptable in healthy relationships.

5. Violence: Physical, emotional, or verbal abuse has no place in any relationship. It’s crucial to recognize the signs and seek help if abuse is present.

By engaging students in open dialogue and interactive activities, we aimed to empower them with the knowledge and skills to cultivate healthy relationships and recognize red flags. We are committed to providing ongoing support and resources to both young people and adults in our community.
